Abstract: The purpose of this article is to investigate “false-labeling”. This was revealed at the beginning of 2002. Some Japanese meat packers deceived consumers by labeling imported beef as Japanese beef. They could put false labels on their beef because many consumers cannot tell the differences between imported and Japanese beef. Asymmetric information in meat quality between consumers and the meat packers is the main cause. The article provides a simple model of meat quality including asymmetric information by using the game theoretical approach. This model explains the phenomenon that the lower the beef value becomes, the higher the possibility of false labeling becomes.
